4 Rochester Ice Cream Spots That Got Me Through the Semester

When I’m not loading the kilns on campus, running to the library for a book, or stressing about a critique, there’s only one thing that can make it better: ice cream! Rochester may not be famous for its summers (though maybe it should be), but it should be famous for its ice cream scene. Here are my go-to spots when I need a break from the studio—or just want to reward myself for a semester well done.

Pittsford Dairy

Pittsford Dairy has old-school charm, creamy scoops, and even sell pies, milk, and other grocery products! They have two locations: one in Pittsford, which feels like the cutest farm, and another on Park Avenue, which is super walkable from lots of tasty restaurants. When I went to the Pittsford location, it felt like stepping onto a real dairy farm. They even had a little bluegrass band playing! The perfect summer vibe, and the line was worth it. I usually go for a scoop of strawberry cheesecake in a waffle cone. Yes, you heard that right—chunks of cheesecake in my ice cream!

Abbott’s Frozen Custard

Abbott’s Frozen Custard is a Rochester classic for a reason. They have multiple locations—one of which is just seven minutes from the RIT campus. Their frozen custard is silky and rich. It feels incredibly nostalgic, especially knowing they’ve been making it since 1902! Bonus: they also have ice cream sandwiches.

Hedonist Artisan Ice Cream

Hedonist Artisan Ice Cream is for when I want to feel fancy. They rotate creative flavors using local ingredients like Spanish saffron, truffle chunk, and key lime pie. I usually go with something weird and something classic. Pro tip: pair it with a walk around the South Wedge.

Ben & Jerry’s (On Campus!)

Sometimes you just need a scoop between classes, and that's when you can find me at our on-campus Ben & Jerry's. It’s reliable, close to the grad studios, and who doesn’t love a scoop of brownie batter? Perfect for those days when you’re working hard and need a reset.

And hey, if ice cream isn’t your thing, Rochester has plenty of sweet alternatives to explore. The city is full of amazing bakeries, and right on campus, Artesano Bakery & Café is a hidden gem. They serve up in-house-made desserts, fresh pastries, and so many other delicious treats—perfect for a study break or post-crit pick-me-up. Whatever your dessert of choice, don’t forget to treat yourself—you’ve earned it!
