7 Dorm Myths, Busted! (What Living on Campus at RIT Is Really Like)

When you imagine living in a dorm for the first time, you might picture something out of a movie: tiny rooms, constant chaos, and absolutely zero privacy. But here’s the truth: a lot of what you hear about dorm life just isn’t accurate, especially at RIT.

As someone who’s seen it firsthand (and heard all the rumors before move-in day), I’m here to break down some of the most common dorm myths and set the record straight, so you can head into your first year with way less worry and way more confidence.

1. Myth: Dorms Are Always Cramped and Uncomfortable

Reality: Yes, dorm rooms are smaller than your bedroom at home, but they’re way more functional than people give them credit for. RIT dorms come furnished with a bed, desk, chair, and dresser, and you’ll get creative when it comes to organizing and decorating. (Command hooks and under-bed storage bins will be your best friends.)

2. Myth: You’ll Never Get Any Privacy

Reality: Sure, you’re sharing a space, but that doesn’t mean you lose all alone time. Whether it’s a quiet moment at your desk with headphones on or heading to one of the many study lounges around campus, you’ll learn how to carve out time for yourself. Plus, having a roommate can be a lot less intense than it sounds when you set boundaries early.

3. Myth: You Have to Be Best Friends with Your Roommate

Reality: Some roommates click instantly. Others stay friendly but do their own thing, and that’s totally fine. You don’t have to be best friends to live well together. Respect, communication, and a shared understanding of habits (bedtime, cleaning, etc.) matter way more than having everything in common.

4. Myth: Dorm Bathrooms Are Disgusting

Reality: Not at RIT. Custodial staff clean the community bathrooms regularly, and most students are pretty respectful of shared spaces. It’s not a luxury spa, but with shower shoes and a shower caddy, you’ll be just fine. Some dorm buildings even have private-style bathrooms, depending on where you’re placed.

5. Myth: You Have to Bring Everything With You on Day One

Reality: You really don’t. There are stores nearby (Target runs are basically a rite of passage), and you’ll figure out what you actually need after living in the space for a bit. Start with the essentials, you can always pick up the rest once you’ve settled in.

6. Myth: Quiet Hours Mean Total Silence

Reality: Quiet hours are more about courtesy than complete silence. You can still listen to music or chat with friends, just keep the volume reasonable. If your floor is noisy during quiet hours, your RA is there to help keep things in check.

7. Myth: Everyone Else Knows What They’re Doing

Reality: Spoiler alert: no one has it all figured out. Everyone’s adjusting, learning how to live away from home, and navigating new routines, just like you. It’s okay to feel unsure at first. You’ll get the hang of it faster than you think, and there are tons of people (RAs, orientation leaders, even your floormates) ready to help.

Dorm life isn’t perfect, but it’s not nearly as scary, gross, or chaotic as the myths make it seem. At RIT, you’ll find community, support, and plenty of ways to make your space feel like your own. So breathe, pack smart, and know that you’re not doing this alone.

See you on campus, Tigers!
