TALK TITLE: Effective and Safe Human Robot Collaboration in Manufacturing with Augmented Reality and Affective Computing
WEBSITE: https://mabl.rit.edu/mabl-team/
HOST: Dr. Ferat Sahin, Professor and Chair of Electrical and Microelectronics
ABSTRACT: With high rates of adoption of collaborative robots in Industry, it becomes necessary to address issues like Worker safety and comfort. Collisions between Humans and robots are the main cause of injury to workers. Besides that, When working with robots, Workers find it harder to anticipate the actions of the robot or find natural ways to communicate with them. By integrating Augmented Reality, Computer Vision and Physiological monitoring I want to look at enhancing worker safety and comfort. I am proposing a framework that will use Head Mounted Displays, Digital Twins, safety monitoring algorithms along with established Human Computer Interaction principles, to bridge this communication gap.
BIO: Karthik Subramanian is a Senior Software Engineer at D3 Embedded Systems and a PhD candidate at the Rochester Institute of Technology. His research focuses on enhancing human-robot collaboration in industrial environments through the integration of augmented reality, computer vision, and physiological monitoring to improve worker safety and comfort. At D3, he builds and deploys custom computer vision and deep learning solutions optimized for NVIDIA Jetson platforms. Outside of work, Karthik is passionate about sports cars—he competes in autocross events with the SCCA in the Finger Lakes region of New York and enjoys playing pickleball in his spare time.
