Developing Sustainable Plastics

Synthetic polymers, most of which are plastics, are ubiquitous. Annually, global production exceeds 500 million metric tons. However, the current linear approach of using mostly fossil fuel-based plastics and generating plastic waste causes massive environmental issues. Our research group aims to synthesize more sustainable polymers. First, we will discuss published work on renewable polymers, followed by examples of biodegradable polymers. Among chain-addition polymers we synthesized are antibacterial ethylene/eugenol copolymers. We also investigated several step-growth polymers, such as tetrapolyesters from biobased phenolic monomers, polyfuranoates with substituted diols, and polybutylene succinate and its analogs with larger dicarboxylates. We will also highlight some ongoing projects. Finally, we will preview upcoming seminar presentations.
