From Innovation to Immunization: How Modern Clinical Testing Technologies Have Accelerated the Delivery of Novel Vaccines to the World

David Cooper
Vice President of Clinical Immunology
Pfizer

Abstract
: For more than a decade, Pfizer Vaccines has invested in robotics, automation, digital technologies, and advanced computing to transform how clinical trial samples are analyzed and converted into the data needed to advance vaccine development. Today, more than 500,000 clinical samples are tested annually in support of Pfizer's vaccine portfolio. These innovations created the foundation for rapid, high-quality clinical testing that helped enable the unprecedented development of the COVID-19 vaccine COMIRNATY®, as well as subsequent vaccines for RSV and pneumococcal disease. This presentation will share the technological journey behind these achievements and demonstrate how innovation across biology, engineering, automation, and computing is helping accelerate the delivery of novel vaccines to the world.

Speaker Bio: David Cooper is Vice President & Head of Clinical Immunology & Diagnostics (CID) within Vaccines, Research & Development at Pfizer’s Pearl River, NY campus. David leads a diverse team of 330+ colleagues tasked with development, qualification, and validation of clinical immunology and diagnostic assays, and their use in supporting key vaccine clinical trial endpoints.  David received a BS in Biotechnology from the Rochester Institute of Technology and received his PhD in Immunology from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology. David joined Pfizer in 2000 as a Senior Research Scientist in the Vaccine R&D organization. For over 25 years, David and his teams have been instrumental in the development and licensure of Pfizer’s vaccines Prevnar 13, Prevnar 20, Trumenba, Penbraya, Comirnaty, and Abrysvo.
