Sew Me A Color: Pat Pauly Recent Work (University Gallery)

Contemporary fiber artist Pat Pauly’s large-scale, abstract works created with surface design on cloth take command of University Gallery with color, pattern, and imagery. An exhibition of Pauly's recent work is on view in the gallery from Aug. 21-Oct. 7. A reception is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.

"I’m often asked, "So, why aren’t you a painter?"

Yes, it’s true that my background is in fine arts and I do paint on fabric with dye and present it two-dimensionally as if it were a painting on a wall. But textiles allow me to construct, deconstruct, and rearrange — essentially, shift the material in a fluid way, which is something I can’t achieve in a painting. My work is not restricted by a stretched canvas of a predetermined size nor by a specific width of a loom, which is how I like it. 

The direct application of thickened dyes allow for the texture, color, and pattern that I crave. Starting with white fabric, I monoprint, screenprint, or use direct application of dye for visual effect. Once a group of fabrics is complete, a color palette is selected and a visual theme or specific image, such as botanicals, is chosen. Often, fabrics join to reveal abstractions that drive the composition.

A lack of family history in quilting gives me a creative advantage. I have no preconceived ideas, block work, patterning, or fabric choices. My approach is to freely paint and print on fabric and then arrange the elements into a composition. As in the historical practice of handwork and craft, these works are quilted — held in three layers with stitches. My work allows some components of traditional textile arts to mingle with a contemporary design practice. And yet, these works are best described as contemporary fabric paintings." 

About the artist

Pauly’s career in textile arts began in 1981. Her works are seen worldwide. A frequent lecturer on the juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary quilting, Pauly teaches design and surface design throughout the United States and abroad. She designs and curates contemporary quilt exhibitions, as well as solo shows.
