The Executive MBA (EMBA) program at Saunders College of Business is preparing a set of curriculum updates with the aim of better aligning executive education with the needs of the current business environment.
The EMBA curriculum will soon introduce a redesigned course in new venture management. Two additional special topics courses will also be added, allowing flexibility to address emerging issues such as artificial intelligence and technological advances, as well as executive leadership in rapidly changing environments.
The changes are informed by students, alumni, and leadership feedback. According to program co-leads Rick Lagiewski and Molly McGowan, the updates also reflect changes in the leadership environment executives are navigating.
“We’re seeing leaders deal with constant change,” said McGowan, co-director of Executive Education, Internal Engagement. “These changes—whether with tariffs, technology, generational differences, remote work, or political uncertainty—have a real impact on their business and their bottom line.”
The well-established and highly ranked EMBA program has continued to evolve and respond to business trends over its more than 30-year history. Initially a management certificate for Rochester giants Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch + Lomb, it was transformed into a full-fledged program designed for experienced professionals seeking advanced business education in 1993, with an online offering beginning in 2009 and life sciences option introduced in 2021.
“One of the things that really differentiates us from other institutions is that everything is very applied and useful right away,” said Lagiewski, co-director of Executive Education, External Engagement.
The curriculum changes are expected to launch with cohorts entering the latter stages of the program in fall 2027.
