Kathy Hochul and CUE Interim Director Ebony Miller celebrate the grand opening of RIT’s Center for Urban Entrepreneurship today in downtown Rochester. The center, known as CUE, is located in the RIT Downtown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in the heart of the city’s downtown innovation zone and is working to help reshape the regional economy and build wealth within the urban community by being the hub for urban entrepreneurial programs and research. The building, constructed in 1927 and now on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, was donated to RIT in 2012 by Rochester Historic Ventures, which is comprised of members of the Leenhouts, Tait, and Tones families, along with members of the Broadstone Real Estate management team.

Jordan Harvey as Spider-Man traveled from Oswego, N.Y., to attend Tora-Con 2016 on April 23. More than 2,500 anime enthusiasts attended the two-day event, which featured discussion panels, celebrity appearances, a concert, live action performances and countless costumed characters. The 12th annual event was put on by RIT’s Student Anime Club.

Third-year environmental science student Laura Denlinger from Suffern, N.Y. assisted during the 17th annual electronic recycling day April 21. The Student Environmental Action League (SEAL) organized the event and has recycled over 250 tons of electronics to date.

Charles Hull, left, the co-founder and chief technology officer of 3D Systems and widely considered the “father of 3D printing,” receives the Melbert B. Cary Jr. Award from RIT President Bill Destler during an April 21 dinner inside the University Gallery. Hull toured 3D printing and research centers with RIT faculty and students earlier in the day. The prestigious award—named in honor of Melbert B. Cary Jr., whose lifelong love and support of the graphic arts inspired others—is presented to those who have distinguished themselves in the advancement of technology in graphic communications and related industries.

Irondequoit native Thomas Bonadio thanked his family, friends and clients as he accepted the 2016 Herbert W. Vanden Brul Entrepreneurial Award on Thursday at Oak Hill Country Club. The CEO and managing partner of The Bonadio Group opened the accounting firm with a business partner in 1978—and today the Rochester-based firm boasts 74 partners and more than 750 employees located in 10 offices. The Herbert W. Vanden Brul Entrepreneurial Award was created in 1984 and annually given to a successful individual who developed a business that improved the Rochester economy or whose innovative management skills have changed the course of an existing business.

Women of Color, Honor and Ambition (WOCHA) presented Dr. Carolyn Jacobs as the speaker for Motivational Mondays. The program highlights successful, diverse individuals from the community. Dr. Jacobs specializes in pediatrics at Rochester General Hospital.

Chi Nguyen, first-year astrophysical science and technology PhD student and Nicholas Burns, first-year biotechnology, helped clean up the community garden on April 16. Over the weekend, volunteers did general clearing and plot allocation as part of Earth Week.

Eric Avar ’90 (industrial design) signed a sneaker for Adam Horeth from Rochester during the Distinguished Alumni networking event Friday at The Wallace Center. Avar, vice president of design innovation at Nike, is the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus from the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. He is the creator of all designs within Kobe Bryant’s signature footwear line. Ten people were honored last week as part of this year’s class of Distinguished Alumni.

Intermedia artist Marc Tasman, a senior lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was among the speakers at the 2016 William A. Kern Conference in Visual Communication. The conference focused on using selfies, self-portraiture and social media.
