President Bill Destler welcomed back the RIT community Friday by outlining a draft of the Strategic Plan 2025. He said the plan’s proposed vision will elevate RIT with a theme of “Greatness Through Difference.” The final plan will be “ambitious, audacious and very achievable,” he said. Destler is urging more feedback and input on the plan before it is brought to the Board of Trustees for approval in November. For more on the plan, go to www.rit.edu/president/plan2025.

RIT held its ninth annual Lighting the Way ceremony on Aug. 21 to welcome new female students to campus. The event is sponsored by the Center for Women and Gender. All women at RIT are invited to attend – new and returning students, alumnae, faculty and staff.

Third-year physician assistant students from the College of Health Sciences and Technology were taught to focus on detail in the Art of Observation program at the Memorial Art Gallery on Aug. 21.

New students connected with their Orientation Assistants and toured campus, had lunch and participated in other fun activities.

Student Convocation officially welcomed new students and their families Aug. 20. New freshmen arrived at RIT during Move-In Day 2014. The Aug. 19 move-in is followed by New Student Orientation, a week of programs and activities that ensures students and their families have a successful transition to RIT. The Gene Polisseni Center is taking shape inside and out. The arena will be the home of the men’s and women’s hockey teams and is expected to be open for play this fall. Season tickets are on sale now and individual game tickets will go on sale August 19.

The College of Health Sciences and Technology, RIT’s ninth college, is expanding. Construction continues on the 45,000-square-foot facility at the north end of Louise M. Slaughter Hall. The Clinical Health Sciences Center is scheduled to open in fall 2015.

RIT has more than 70 new faculty for fall semester and all were invited to New Faculty Orientation this week. The agenda included an expo in The Wallace Center, workshops on critical information and RIT culture, as well as a chance to network. Twenty newly accepted deaf and hard-of-hearing students with little or no prior skills in American Sign Language arrived on campus August 6 for the New Signers Program, a one-week immersion program where students learn basic sign skills and get an introduction to Deaf culture.

Nearly 220 deaf and hard-of-hearing students arrived on campus on Aug. 12 to attend the Summer Vestibule Program, an orientation program for RIT/NTID students. The bulk of RIT’s incoming first-year students arrive on Aug. 19.
