David Beyerlein was one of the “undecideds” who had yet to choose a major when he came to RIT in 2009. With help from the University Services Program, he found his niche in imaging and photography technology.

Renowned photographer, editor and professor Fred Ritchin addressed a crowd of about 300 people in Webb Auditorium on Nov. 3 as one of the featured speakers of RIT’s Caroline Werner Gannett Project “Visionaries in Motion V” series. Ritchin, author of After Photography and In Our Own Image: The Coming Revolution in Photography, explored how photography and other media have been transformed by the digital age, the new ways of thinking about photography, the future for the photography profession in the “Facebook world,” new problems that the digital age poses and the impact and usefulness of the photographic image in democracy and today’s society. Next up for the series is Drew Berry, award-winning biomedical animator, who speaks Dec. 8.

Facilities Management Services recently completed renovations to the Tojo Memorial Garden, in the Kodak Quad, including the addition of new paths. The garden is a tribute to Yasuji Tojo, an RIT photography student who lost his life in an car accident, in 1964, while studying at RIT. The focal point of the garden is a hand-carved granite lantern, a gift of Yasuji’s parents. At their request, the garden was dedicated as a “living memorial to eternal youth.”

RIT Ambulance held a reception Nov. 4 to let community members see Defib 63, its new 2011 Chevy Tahoe first-response vehicle. The vehicle is equipped to respond to mass-casualty incidents and life-threatening emergencies. Defib 63 also has a low-frequency “howler” siren that slightly rumbles nearby vehicles, warning other drivers of the ambulance.

RIT’s Muslim Student Association dedicated a new mural in the tunnels under the residence halls on Nov. 3. The mural signifies Muslim tradition, belief and values, says Yilmaz Yoruk, a biomedical sciences major and member of the association. Friday Coffee Chat is scheduled each Friday this quarter at Ellie’s Place, outside the Student Development Center from 1-2 p.m. It is a lighthearted way to have faculty/staff interact with students outside of the classroom setting during NTID’s Activity Hour. This program is geared towards our Freshman Seminar students, but any student and any faculty/staff member are welcome to join in and chat, relax with a cup of free coffee.

Costumed children from Care-A-Lot Child Care had their annual Halloween trek to Facilities Management Services, building 99, on Oct. 31. This group of 3-year-olds received treats at various candy stations, offices and the postal room.

Members of the School of Interactive Games and Media organized a flash mob Oct. 31. The group danced to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in Global Village. The flash mob was organized as an achievement for the school’s recent launch of Just Press Play, an RIT and Microsoft-funded project that applies interactive game design to the college experience.

Students attending the Brick City Student Wellness Fair on Oct. 28 had a chance to talk to health-care professionals about diabetes, nutrition, dermatology, stress anxiety and other health concerns. NTID Performing Arts presents The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a classic Halloween tale performed in American Sign Language and voice and featuring music, dance, life-sized puppets, shadow puppetry and more. The production is directed by Luane Davis Haggerty, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28-29 and 2 p.m. Oct. 30 in Panara Theatre.

Designer and author-turned-reality-television-star Lisa Roberts shared her catalog of design knowledge with RIT students during a visit to the Vignelli Center for Design Studies. Roberts, featured in the television series “My Design Life,” was the guest in the Vignelli Design Conversations. Roberts is the author of Antiques of the Future.
