The RIT community celebrated the addition of Global Village, a $57 million residential and retail complex, on Sept. 30. The unique area features restaurants, a beach volleyball court, full-service salon, post office, bank and 414 beds for student housing. Global Village adds another dimension to RIT’s international and study abroad focus.

RIT will celebrate the official opening of Global Village at 3 p.m. Sept. 30 at the complex situated between Crossroads and the University Services Center. The grand opening program will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, entertainment and tours of the complex.

Computer Science Professor Reynold Bailey recently won a five-year $550,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to continue his work on gaze manipulation techniques. Above, Peter Mahon, a graduate student in computer science, participates in a study to explore how various display techniques can be used to improve spatial memory recall.

Renowned innovation proponent and author Richard Lester was the third speaker in the Rochester and the Innovation Economy lecture series sponsored by New York State Assemblyman Joseph Morelle and RIT’s College of Liberal Arts and E. Philip Saunders College of Business on Sept. 28.

The 15th annual Mud Tug took place Sept. 25 in the field behind Grace Watson Hall. Mud Tug, sponsored by RIT’s Phi Kappa Psi and Zeta Tau Alpha Greek organizations, is an annual tug-of-war event between teams of 10 competing in all-male, all-female and co-ed brackets, taking place in a huge mud pit. All of the proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to Hillside Family of Agencies.

Dennis Formento, a poet, editor and publisher of Surregional Press, read his poetry and led a discussion on Sept. 23. Formento’s appearance was supported by an Interactive Learning Grant from the Office of Student Affairs and is in connection with Dr. Roche’s Creative Writing: Poetry class.

The 2010 RIT Farmers Market kicked off its season Sept. 9. RIT students, faculty and staff are invited to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables on campus through Oct. 14.

The Fall Community Service Fair took place on Sept. 22 in the Student Alumni Union lobby. Non-profit agencies from the Rochester area provided students, faculty, and staff with information on the types of services they provide and the volunteer opportunities available. Ming Hsuan Chiang, a graduate student in RIT’s industrial design program, has built an 18-foot long rotatable seesaw for his thesis project. Chiang has been working for the past two months with Dean Shorey, an engineer at Seabreeze Amusement Park, to construct it.

Xanthe Matychak, Andrea Handy and Michelle Harris will be bringing their project, “River Memoir,” to the Maker Faire in New York City on Sept. 25. The three are knitting a long blue scarf that symbolizes a river. Visitors to their exhibit will be able to weave their own personal six-word memoirs into the river.
