Tom Malinowski, Washington advocacy director for Human Rights Watch and an expert in United States foreign policy, was the keynote speaker for Campus Week of Dialogue Oct. 26. Before joining Human Rights Watch, Malinowski was special assistant to President Bill Clinton and senior director for foreign policy speech writing at the National Security Council. Malinowski holds degrees in political science from the University of California, Berkeley and Oxford University.

Biking enthusiasts from around Greater Rochester embarked on the first Greenway GreenRide Oct. 24. The five-mile bike trip was designed to promote biking as an environmentally-friendly method of transportation. The ride began at downtown Rochester’s Rundel Libary and ended at RIT’s Center for Student Innovation. Here, Joe Pow, associate director of the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, leads an RIT group.

Faculty, staff and students helped to turn up the volume on RIT’s annual fund raising effort during ROAR Day, the fourth annual Raise Our Annual Responses initiative, on Oct. 21. Gifts made during ROAR Day help support RIT’s General Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Glenn Steele Jr., CEO of Geisinger Health System, was a featured speaker Oct. 22 in the joint health care seminar series, “Innovations in Health Care Delivery and Design.” Steele’s presentation is part of the strategic alliance between RIT and Rochester General Health System. He spoke about “ProvenCare—A Model for Managed Care 3.0” before invited health and business leaders from the Rochester-area community.

RIT’s Habitat for Humanity student organization sponsored the Sign-A-Stud fundraiser for the club’s Sustainable House Project, in conjunction with Flower City Habitat for Humanity. For a suggested donation of $5, patrons could sign lumber that will become part of a sustainable home for a Rochester resident in need. Susanne Weatherly, associate interpreter, checks out the Information and Technology Services Status Display of all 65,000 IP addresses on the RIT campus. The interactive display is in the glass rotunda of the new Center for Student Innovation. Address usage, firewall events, server status and other network connections can be seen on the display screen. The information from the monitor helps systems engineers assess network patterns and pinpoint trouble spots. The right-hand monitor displays real-time temperature data from sensors in the Data Center. The display system was developed by ITS system engineer Matt Campbell.

Construction continues for the new Campus Center, located in the heart of campus in the former Woodward Pool area. The center will serve as an alternate entry to the Student Alumni Union and have a second level overlook onto the Quarter Mile. The facility’s main level will house Student Government, the Leadership Institute and Community Service Center and the RIT Women’s Center. It will also include three conference rooms and an area designated for RIT clubs and club services.

Pete Grannis, left, commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, received a tour of the newly opened offices of the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute at RIT on Oct. 8. The comprehensive research and development center, funded by DEC, focuses on assisting New York businesses in reducing their environmental footprint and preventing pollution. He participated in a ribbon cutting with RIT President Bill Destler and Anahita Williamson, director of the Pollution Prevention Institute.

Several members of the RIT Dubai board of directors were on campus recently to meet with RIT administrators and faculty and tour laboratories and classrooms. The Teaching and Learning Technology Studio is a test-bed facility that showcases the synergy of RIT faculty and staff through experimental, participatory and sustainable teaching, learning and communication. A demonstration during RIT Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend included multi-image projection with three rear-screen digital projectors and 18 feet of screen. A touch panel control system has the flexibility of operation at the podium or remotely from anywhere in the classroom.

Vernon Wall, nationally known speaker on social justice, leadership and the quality of student life, kicked off the 2009 North Star Center Distinguished Speaker Series on Oct. 10. The presentation was part of the RIT Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities.

Richard Reeve, associate dean of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, was recognized at the 40th anniversary celebration of the industrial and systems engineering department during Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend. Reeve was the first chair of the department and one of its faculty members.
