A panel of experts in technology and society discussed the works and accomplishments of pioneering computer scientist, futurist and entrepreneur Ray Kurzweil during Kurzweilfest, an interactive discussion with students and faculty at RIT’s Ingle Auditorium. Kurzweil opens the 2008-2009 Caroline Werner Gannett Project lecture series at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in Gordon Field House and Activities Center. The U.S. Army Drill Team warmed up for this weekend’s "Spirit of America Show" at the Blue Cross Arena by performing for the RIT campus Sept. 9 in Gordon Field House and Activities Center.

In her role as a student ambassador for the Division of Enrollment Management and Career Services, Tiffani Williams is often among the first people that prospective students meet during their visit to campus. Tiffani is a graphic media student in the School of Print Media.

Classes began on the RIT campus on Sept. 1 with nearly 3,000 first-year students adding to the population.

RIT hosted its first farmers’ market Aug. 28 outside Gordon Field House and Activities Center. A half-dozen vendors had steady business from roughly an equal mix of students and faculty/staff. “I’m thrilled it was welcomed so enthusiastically by the RIT community,” said Midge Berfield, manager of employee health and wellness and chair of the RIT Better Me/Employee Wellness Committee. The market, featuring fruits, vegetables, breads, pastry and live entertainment, will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursdays through Oct. 9.

RIT’s renovated SAU cafeteria re-opened Aug. 18 featuring electronic menus, reconfigured space with enhanced foot traffic, and a new name: Brick City Café.

First-year students arrived at RIT and participated in the annual “Tiger Walk,” where they were welcomed by a crowd of faculty, staff and Ritchie the Tiger.

A selection of ephemera related to Clifford M. Ulp, a Mechanics Institute professor and director of the School of Art and Design, 1913-1952. There are more than 100 paintings by Ulp and Milton E. Bond, another Mechanics Institute professor on view in a special exhibit. Also included are works by Walter Sacks (without an RIT connection) at the Antiques Mall of Rochester, 400 West Commercial St., East Rochester, through Aug. 30.
