Jen Loomis, a fourth-year software engineering student in the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, is the editor in chief of Reporter, RIT’s student-published weekly newsmagazine. Loomis is also active in the Honors Program and played for several years in the RIT Jazz Ensemble.

Retired U.S. Army Major General John Batiste spoke at RIT Dec. 5 about his reflections on Iraq. Batiste commanded the First U.S. Infantry Division in Iraq, and retired from the Army in order to speak out against the war. The event was sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts Honors Program and the Department of Political Science. Here, he signed a sketch, done by an attendee, of him speaking to the packed crowd.

Industrial engineering students demonstrated their senior projects to Candi Cross, managing editor of Industrial Engineering Magazine, on Nov. 29. Cross was on campus to gather information for a feature article on sustainability in higher education.

Jared Lyon, a Web developer in University Publications, co-organizes the annual Twin Peaks Festival held in North Bend, Wash., for fans of the quirky murder mystery that ran on ABC in the early 1990s. Lyon also created the festival’s Web page, www.twinpeaksfest.com.

RIT hosted the second annual Freescale Rochester Technology Symposium on Nov. 28. The event brought together researchers and students from around the world to discuss the latest developments in embedded systems research and education.

These images and memorabilia, currently on display in a new exhibit at the RIT Museum in Wallace Library, reflect RIT’s leadership of its nine presidents. The exhibit, which runs until March 2008, is in honor of the inauguration of Bill Destler as RIT’s ninth president.

Nate Kane, a fifth-year microelectronic engineering major, spent the spring of 2007 serving as a teaching assistant for an Irondequoit High School physics class. The service learning assignment was a component of the Department of Microelectronic Engineering’s community outreach program and funded through a National Science Foundation education grant.

Ferat Sahin, associate professor of electrical engineering, recently published Practical and Experimental Robotics, a guide to robotic theory, experimentation and construction for beginners, hobbyists and andvanced learners.

Students from RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences and Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences are putting on a theater performance in a virtual world in January. While they do a live performance, audience members will be watching from computers in another room. Students had a dress rehearsal of the short production called Critters on Nov. 16.

Zack Butler, RIT assistant professor of computer science, is a member of the U.S. Puzzle team that just won the World Finals in Brazil.
