One-of-a-kind glass pumpkins and gourds, handblown by faculty and students in RIT's School for American Crafts, will be on sale from 1 to 4 p.m. at Liberty Hill on Saturday, Oct. 22. The fundraiser will benefit the RIT Women’s Council scholarship fund and SAC’s glass program. SAC will help alumni who lost homes and businesses in Hurricane Katrina. The prices of the pumpkins will range from $25 to $200. Organizers hope to make this an annual event.

Ali Ogut (right), RIT professor of mechanical engineering, has assumed licensing rights to a set of environment-friendly technologies. The agreement between his company, Environmental Energy Technologies, and RIT includes a particulate trap for diesel emissions (foreground) and two UV disinfection reactors (background) developed by Ogut's team in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. Joining Ogut are one of his directors, Monty Estes, and Varda Main, RIT’s director of technology licensing.

Aneita Gage ’94 (M.S. engineering management), a technical training manager at Intel Corp. in Chandler, Ariz., visited RIT on Sept. 28 to present A Day in the Life at Intel to an electrical engineering class and How to Prepare a High-Tech Resume to the RIT chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.

Members of RIT’s Formula SAE team, visiting Greece Arcadia Middle School for Arcadia Day, shared insight about their student-built race car in a presentation to sixth-grade through eighth-grade students on Oct. 6. Above, Anthony Capobianco, a fourth-year mechanical engineering major and Formula team project manager, explains to students how a differential works.

Wendell Castle, artist-in-residence in the School for American Crafts, gave a presentation to students from the RIT’s chapter of Industrial Designers Society of America on Sept. 30. The renowned sculptor and furniture designer talked about his undergraduate experience, his career and the line of furniture he designs for Icon Design in LeRoy, N.Y., Castle recently gave a tour of the factory to industrial design students.

At a ceremony Oct. 8 at the RIT boathouse, Thomas Gosnell, right, christens one of three new shells he and his wife, Georgia, donated to the RIT crew program. The boats, named J. Craig, Arthur J., and Avis, made their debut the following day in the Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta on the Genesee River. Gosnell is an RIT trustee, chairman emeritus and longtime supporter of RIT's crew program.

Jocelyn Milliman, a senior marketing major in RIT's College of Business, won the Disney/ESPN Dream Internship Competition that took place Oct. 7 in the RITz Sports Zone. Finalists were charged with presenting a marketing plan which highlighted the use of cable TV advertising. In the background is one of the judges, Jessica Gugino, a 2000 RIT graduate and ESPN advertising account executive.

Members of the RIT men's crew team head for the starting line to compete at the 2005 Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta. Thousands of spectators lined the banks of the Genesee River on Oct. 9 to witness the 17th annual event, hosted by RIT and University of Rochester. Harvard University and Western Ontario captured the top two men's and women's open trophies, while Williams College women's heavyweight and Marietta's men's heavyweight eights were the top college division finishers.

Comedian Jon Stewart entertained a sold-out crowd in the Gordon Field House during his performance at RIT's Brick City Homecoming on Oct. 8. Stewart, host of "The Daily Show" on cable TV's Comedy Central network, was among the weekend's featured performers, which also included singer Jason Mraz and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani speaks to students, parents, alumni and guests during RIT's Brick City Homecoming on Sept. 8. Giuliani shared his views on leadership as this year's Horton Distinguished Speaker. Prior to his address, he joined a group of RIT students in a roundtable discussion where he laid out various qualities that, in his mind, are necessary for people to become effective leaders.

Ursula Burns, president of Xerox Business Group Operations, share her career perspective as part of RIT's Women in Leadership Speaker Series on Oct. 6. Burns talked about lessons that Xerox learned as it reinvented itself from the "copier company" into an innovative, $16 billion technology and services enterprise. Her accolades include being named among the 50 Most Powerful Women in America by Fortune magazine.

Kevin Schulte, vice president of Sustainable Energy Developments Inc., touts the value of wind energy at the RENEW NY open house, hosted by RIT on Oct. 4. The company works with municipalities and various other organizations in distributing wind projects. Dozens of other exhibitors took part in the open house. RENEW NY (Renewable Energy Network of Entrepreneurs in Western New York) launched last year to support area start-up firms in the commercialization of renewable energy technologies.
