RIT Musicians Perform at Rochester International Jazz Festival

The New Energy Jazz Orchestra, led by Rochester Institute of Technology music faculty Carl Atkins and Jon Kruger, will present a concert of original compositions and classical jazz repertory at 6 p.m. June 18 as part of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. The band will perform at the Verizon Wireless Festival Big Tent at the corner of Gibbs and East Main Streets. Admission is $20.
New Energy is a Rochester-based big band ensemble co-directed by Kruger, associate professor of music, and Atkins, professor and director of the music program, both at RIT. The band has performed and recorded widely including appearances at previous editions of the jazz festival as well as the Monroe Community College Jazz Festival. New Energy can also be heard on the CD Sands of Time.
In addition to their work in New Energy, Kruger and Atkins have both recorded and performed widely with some of the biggest names in jazz, pop and rhythm and blues including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Julie Andrews and Barry Manilow.
The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Fest was founded in 2001 and is an increasingly prominent summer music festival bringing a host of major stars to Rochester each summer including Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis and Chick Corea.
