Rochester Institute of Technology has appointed Meredith Smith as associate vice president for government and community relations, effective immediately. Smith, who joined RIT in 2010 as director of state and local government relations, takes on additional responsibilities in developing and implementing the university’s state and federal advocacy efforts as well as community relations and “town/gown” initiatives.

“Meredith is a great asset to RIT’s Division of Government and Community Relations, and I am pleased to recognize her contributions to the university with this promotion,” says Deborah Stendardi, RIT’s vice president for government and community relations. “She has already added great value to our team with her knowledge and experience, and she will have the opportunity to expand her involvement and impact in the greater community in her new role.”

Smith currently serves on the board of directors for the Henrietta Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Rochester and the Women’s Council of the Rochester Business Alliance, and she recently joined Rochester Rotary, serving on the program committee.

Prior to joining RIT, Smith worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and practiced law in the metropolitan Washington area. She received her bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and has a J.D. from George Mason University.

“I look forward to taking on new challenges at RIT,” Smith says. “It is an incredible honor to advocate for RIT’s institutional goals before our state and federal governments and to represent RIT in the Greater Rochester community.”

Originally from Canandaigua, Smith lives in Fairport with her husband, Clair Smith, and children Kendall and Ronan.
