RIT Photographic Arts And Sciences Gallery Presents ‘American Youth’ Feb. 4

A generation of Americans ages 18 to 24 are captured in detail in an exhibition called American Youth, drawn from a 24-page book of the same title.

They are the stars of Redux Pictures, the New York City-based independent commercial and editorial photo agency, which sent their photographers to document this dynamic group’s cultural and personal attributes—traveling from urban housing projects and rural organic farms, to Navajo tribal land and the stage of TV reality series “American Idol.”

The American Youth exhibition will be on display at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences Gallery during an opening reception at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 in the SPAS Gallery and is preceded by a lecture by participating exhibition photographer Erika Larsen at 6 p.m. in the Carlson auditorium in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science. The show runs through March 5.

On Feb. 18, photographer Danny Wilcox Frazier will also give an artist’s lecture in association with American Youth. His talk will be held in the Carlson Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m.

“This signature exhibition shows how this evolving, dynamic group is different and how they are the same as generations that came before them,” says Professor Therese Mulligan, administrative chair in RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences and School of Photographic Arts and Sciences director.

“The photographs present a multitude of coming of age stories against a national backdrop of diverse social transition.”

SPAS Gallery, located on the third floor of the Frank E. Gannett Building, is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and by appointment on Saturday.
