Students win international scholarships

Students studying abroad will be recognized this week at the Global Learning Symposium

Rochester Institute of Technology students have won a variety of international scholarships and fellowships for the summer term and upcoming academic year. They will be recognized at the Global Learning Symposium on April 27 in the Vignelli Center at James E. Booth Hall.

A total of 13 students have won funding for international experiences through different programs.

Four RIT students have won the Gilman International Scholarship for the summer term. This program aims to diversify study abroad participants and awards up to $5,000 for undergraduates. Gilman winners are:

  • Geraldine Dang, a 3D digital design student in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, who will complete a summer internship in Singapore;
  • Samuel Williamson, a political science major in the College of Liberal Arts, who will study in India;
  • Frankie Albin, an applied arts and sciences student in the international studies program who will continue his studies in RIT Kosovo.
  • Taryn Brennan, an international and global studies major in the College of Liberal Arts, who will continue her studies in Russia.

Two students won $10,000 scholarships from the Council on International Educational Exchange, or CIEE, Study Abroad. They are studying this spring semester at the CIEE Open Campuses in Berlin, London, Paris and Rome. As CIEE Global Scholars, the students will engage in comparative learning experiences at three locations during the 18-week program. RIT recipients are:

  • Orlando Toribio, a political science major in the College of Liberal Arts, who is currently studying in London, Paris and Berlin;
  • Gwendolyn Doherty, an applied mathematics student in the College of Science, who is currently studying in London, Rome and Paris.

Four RIT students won fellowships to study at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan. The KIT Fellowship is a six-week program during which students attend intensive Japanese language classes and lectures, and participate in cultural programs and field trips. The awardees are:

  • Connor Menard, a game design and development student in B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences;
  • Victoria Lauren Sardelli, a computer science major in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences;
  • Anne Tan, a packaging science student in the College of Applied Science and Technology;
  • Julia Wessen, a game design and development major in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.

Four RIT students won scholarships from the DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) program. RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North America and British universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. The awardees are:

  • Connor Jensen, a mechanical engineering major in Kate Gleason College of Engineering;
  • Emily Adams, a mechanical engineering major in Kate Gleason College of Engineering;
  • Ethan Griswold, a mechanical engineering major in Kate Gleason College of Engineering;
  • Andrew Ramsey, a computer engineering major in Kate Gleason College of Engineering.
