Dear RIT community:
We have reached an important milestone for RIT. I am pleased to share the 2035 Strategic Framework, Transforming Lives Through Creativity and Innovation.
This framework, recently approved by the Board of Trustees, is more than a document. It is a clear statement of who we are, the principles we hold true, and how we will lead in a time of profound change for higher education and for the world. It reflects RIT’s distinctive approach—charting our own path, integrating technology with the arts, design, business, science, and the humanities, and turning disruption into opportunity.
We are navigating a moment defined by rapid technological change, shifting demographics, and complex global challenges. At the same time, the opportunities before us are extraordinary. RIT is uniquely positioned to lead in areas where creativity and innovation intersect—AI, health sciences and technology, creative technology and technical creativity, quantum science, sustainability, and a cyber- and data-driven world. This Strategic Framework provides the clarity and focus we need to move forward with intention and confidence.
At its core, the framework is grounded in our enduring purpose: to educate and empower the next generation of leaders, innovators, creators, and problem-solvers who will advance society and contribute to the greater good. It calls on us to deliver transformative student experiences, pioneer world-changing research, foster a culture of well-being and belonging, and strengthen RIT’s global reach and mindset—all supported by an agile, resilient organization that tells our story with clarity and inspiration.
Importantly, this framework was shaped by you.
The process began in spring 2024 and involved an extensive series of conversations and engagements across our community. More than 1,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and partners shared their perspectives, ideas, and aspirations for RIT’s future. Your voices challenged us to think boldly, to stay true to what makes RIT distinctive, and to imagine what is possible over the next decade. This framework reflects that collective vision, and I am deeply grateful for the time, energy, and care so many of you invested in this work.
I also want to thank the members of the Steering Committee—co-chaired by Enid Cardinal and Trustee Frank Sklarsky—and everyone who helped guide, inform, and steward this process. Their leadership and commitment ensured that the framework is ambitious, grounded, and authentically RIT.
As we move forward, this Strategic Framework will guide decisions, priorities, and investments across the university. It is not a static plan, but a living compass—one that will require collaboration, experimentation, accountability, and shared responsibility. Its success depends on all of us: how we teach and learn, how we conduct research and creative work, how we support one another, and how we engage with the world beyond our campus.
RIT’s strength has always been its people. Together, we have built a university powered by ideas, driven by purpose, and committed to making a difference. This is our moment to imagine boldly, act with intention, and lead with heart.
Thank you for all that you do for RIT and for the role you will play in shaping our future.
With gratitude and optimism for RIT’s future,
Sincerely,
Bill
