Johnson County Community College (JCCC) is looking to fill a full-time faculty position in ASL & Deaf Studies Department to teach American Sign Language courses. JCCC is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. JCCC is looking for a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time faculty position in the ASL & Deaf Studies Department to teach Elementary and Intermediate ASL courses including Fingerspelling, Introduction to the Deaf Community, the Linguistics of ASL, and/or ASL Literature courses.

The ASL & Deaf Studies Department offers an ASL Studies Certificate and ASL courses that serve as preparation for students to continue their education in bachelor’s degree programs. The department is part of the Communications Division.

The successful applicant for this job will teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in ASL. This person will perform other duties expected of full-time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours; developing and revising curriculum; developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in department, division and college meetings; serving on committees; participating in any ASL related initiatives at JCCC; collaborating with and observing adjunct faculty teaching ASL; collaborating and working successfully with other full-time faculty in the ASL & Deaf Studies Department; and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments could be any combination of face-to-face day or evening courses, hybrid, online hybrid, or online and are subject to change as needed.

Work hours: Monday-Friday 8-5 and evening hours as needed to teach night classes and other departmental duties.

Additional responsibilities:
Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for ASL students.
Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives.
Participate in on-campus events promoting languages.

Requirements

Required:
Bachelor’s Degree with ASLTA Certification or Master’s Degree in an ASL related degree (ASL and/or Deaf Studies, Teaching of ASL or ASL Teaching, Sign Language Education, ASL/English Interpreting or Deaf Education) as required by JCCC HLC (Higher Learning Commission) criteria

-Demonstrated 2 years past teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or high
school teaching experience
-Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills by supervisor and
colleagues’ letters of reference
-Demonstrated ability to teach Elementary and Intermediate level ASL courses, and other
Courses such as Fingerspelling, Introduction to the Deaf Community, Linguistics of ASL,
and ASL Literature
-Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of using technology in the classroom,
Learning Management System software such as Canvas, and teaching delivery method on
face-to-face, online hybrid, hybrid, and/or online
-Demonstrated Self-starter, strong interpersonal skills and understanding
of adult learning

Preferred:
-More than 2 years teaching experience at the post-secondary level
-Demonstrated knowledge with Vista’s Signing Naturally Curriculum
-Demonstrated knowledge of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for learning languages
