About the Agency:

VDDHH is a small Department with a dynamic team of dedicated and passionate
deaf and hearing professionals working in a fast-paced environment. VDDHH
statewide services are organized into 3 niche industries in
telecommunications, interpreting and community services. We strive for
continuous improvements seeking to streamline operations for maximum
efficiency and effectiveness.

Job Duties:

Deaf & Hard of Hearing is seeking a Deaf Mentor Coordinator to organize,
coordinate, and oversee Deaf Mentor services for families across the
Commonwealth.

Responsibilities:

Deaf Mentor & Family Coordination

Plans and hosts meet and greet events for sessions between Deaf Mentors and
families, coordinating appropriate days, times, and locations based on each
family’s needs. Provides Deaf Mentors with needed resources and maintains
ongoing contact with families and mentors to coordinate, oversee, and monitor
Deaf Mentor Services. Provides culturally competent services including
coaching Deaf Mentors, conducting home visits, and performing assessments.
Assists families in making unbiased decisions regarding communication,
education, or technology. Connects referred families with available Deaf
Mentors and perform as a Deaf Mentor if necessary. Assists with lesson plan
preparation. Must communicate effectively in ASL with Deaf Mentors, hearing
parents, and Deaf children without an interpreter.

Community Partnerships & Outreach

Connect families with local Deaf communities and/or Deaf organizations to
help families with meet other Deaf or Hard of Hearing adults and children.
Communicate effectively with educators, professionals, and administrators.
Provides presentations about the Deaf Mentor Program to diverse groups across
Virginia.

Recruitment, Training & Evaluation

Recruits, trains, motivates, directs, monitors, and evaluates Deaf Mentors.
Follows up with mentors to assess productivity and with families to assess
session quality. Collects and reports outcome and evaluation data regularly.
Strong writing skills required.

Program Management

Manages the program including developing policies, procedures, forms, and
reports. Works with state employees in procurement, fiscal and budget, IT,
and other business operations to comply with state requirements. Meets
regularly with the Community Services Manager to report on program
activities.



Requirements:
Knowledge:
• Knowledge of principles and best practices of program management.
• Knowledge of Federal and State laws applicable to the position
• Knowledge of early childhood development, early intervention &educational
processes including the IFSP and IEP
• Knowledge of Deaf Culture and history with ability to interact with local
D/HH communities
• Knowledge and acceptance of the variety of communication modalities (ASL,
Cued Speech, Spoken English)
Skills/Abilities:
• Ability to adhere to Commonwealth of Virginia requirements and program
operating procedures
• Ability to perform as a Deaf Mentor and provide services to families
• Ability to drive a vehicle to provide DM services
• Ability to problem solve when issues arise
• Effective communication of information and ideas with others
• Effective writing skills necessary to complete reports and evaluations
• Ability to maintain working relationships with staff, families, and
outside entities

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required for Entry into
Position: -

Professional experience must be in the area of planning, administering,
developing, or delivering programs for deaf, hard of hearing and/or deafblind
individuals, preferably in early childhood development, early intervention,
language acquisition or deaf education fields
- American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) certification at Level
3.5 or SLPI: Advanced Plus or equivalent is required for the position
- Experience with program development, management, and administration in a
human services environment including experience with establishing,
understanding and implementing policies and procedures

During the probationary period:

- Completion of SKI-HI Deaf Mentor 3-day training is required
- Completion of Infant & Toddler of Virginia early intervention training
modules is required

Additional Considerations:

Monitoring of contractor performance experience preferred

Must be willing to travel statewide and work evenings and weekends
