Job Description:
TITLE:	SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED IN  GRADES K-12
SUPERVISOR:	Director of Special Education
QUALIFICATIONS:
•	Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
•	Must hold a valid Idaho State Education Credential endorsed in the
assigned teaching area
•	Must meet Idaho Core Teacher Standards and Highly Qualified requirements
for Core Content Subject Area(s) as defined by the State Department
•	Must have knowledge of equipment that can support students with hearing
impairments to include: FM systems, hearing aids, etc.
•	Preferred candidates will have knowledge and experience conducting
student hearing screenings.

JOB GOAL:
Provide direct educational and consultative services to elementary and
secondary students who have been identified as hearing impaired.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
PLANNING AND PREPARATION:
•	Identify goals, objectives, instructional methods and materials in
specialized areas related to the hearing needs of students.
•	Provide direct and/or consultative assistant to the regular classroom
teacher and paraprofessionals of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
•	Provides coordination of curriculum and accepts responsibility for
adapting or changing curriculum as needed to meet individual student need and
objectives.
•	Reviews and corrects completed assignments, using aids as needed.
•	Instruct the student in academic subjects and activities and
developmental skills requiring adaptations and reinforcement as a direct
result of the hearing handicap.
•	Use instructional materials adopted by the District to teach the
curriculum and employ methods that are most appropriate for meeting stated
objectives
•	Stay abreast of new equipment and information, know how to troubleshoot
equipment, know how to install needed hearing amplification, care of hearing
aids, FM systems.
•	Order, fit and maintain equipment and equipment records in accordance
with the district.
•	Conduct hearing screeners for students in both the regular and special
education classrooms.
•	Design schedules to effectively address students’ IEP goals and related
services
•	Encourages students to participate in classroom learning experiences to
ensure their comprehension of subject matter, development of social skills,
and ability to identify objects encountered in daily living.
•	Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals,
establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, and communicate these
objectives to students.
•	Communicate student progress on a regular basis and provide progress
reports as required.  To include but not limited to:  progress reports,
district assessments, on-going assessments, etc.
•	Collaborate as a member of evaluation/eligibility/IEP team meetings.
Collaborates with parents, related service personnel, general education
personnel and outside agencies, as appropriate
•	Assist families to assess their own strengths and needs regarding their
children’s hearing, academic, and functional development.
•	Assist families in providing guidance in using community resources.
•	Provide appropriate education support services to student according to
the Individual Education Plan (IEP) within the Special Education Room and
General Classroom settings,
•	Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students,
equipment, materials, and facilities and follow prescribed safety regulations
•	Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law,
District procedures, and Board Policy
•	Provide cooperative and positive involvement in extracurricular
activities and other duties as may be assigned to meet the needs of students,
building, and district to include but not limited to:  small and large
supervision, attendance at school functions, etc.
•	Contribute and maintain a positive environment with staff, students,
parents, and administration establishing open lines of communication. To
include but not limited to email, websites, meetings, newsletters, etc.
•	Continually strive to maintain and improve professional competencies
keeping abreast of new developments in the education of students with hearing
handicaps.
•	Act in a fiscally responsible and timely manner in regard to field trips,
purchases, and in the implementation of instructional programming following
District Procedures
•	Be knowledgeable of, and uphold, all policies pertaining to teachers and
students as specified in Board Policies and District Rules and Regulations
and Idaho Code of Ethics
•	Follows the direction provided by the Director of Special Education,
particularly that direction which relates to the implementation of federal,
state, and local rules and regulations
•	Understand and apply rules and regulations found in the Individual with
Disability Act (IDEA) and Idaho Special Education Manual through utilization
of district electronic IEP software and the scheduling and facilitation of
evaluation, eligibility and IEP meetings
•	Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the
Building Principal may assign

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - required with or without a reasonable accommodation:

•	Visual acuity to comprehend written work, prepare, review, and organize
documents and observe classroom and student activities
•	Manual dexterity to perform repetitive hand/wrist/arm motions and to
operate a computer and office equipment and to physically restrain a student
to keep from harming self and/or others
•	Personal mobility, flexibility, and balance which permits the employee to
work in a school special education environment
•	Physical ability to meeting varied student needs and may change
frequently.  Tasks include:  bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling,
crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and lifting/moving objects
that weigh up to 20 lbs frequently.

EVALUATION:	Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with
provisions of the Board's
policy on Evaluation of Certificated Personnel.
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT:	Exempt Position on teaching contract approved by the State
Department of Idaho.
