• Wishing the best of luck to our athletes as they get ready to compete in the Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan, Nov. 15-26.
    • Dov Nathanson, wrestling, an aerospace engineering major from St. Paul, Minnesota
    • Antoine Phillips, wrestling, a criminal justice major from Alton, Illinois
    • Zain Shahid, volleyball, an exercise science major from San Diego, California
    • Blessed Mbogo, basketball, an applied statistics graduate student from Silver Spring, Maryland
    • Andrea Zuchegno, chairperson of the Department of Visual Communications Studies, women’s bowling

Along with Dov, Antoine, Zain, and Blessed, and Andrea, two other members of our NTID community will participate in the Deaflympics:

John Macko, director of NTID’s Co-op and Career Center, is head coach of the Men’s Indoor Volleyball team, and Skip Flanagan, visiting assistant professor in NTID’s Department of Science and Mathematics, is a member of the Performance Psychology team working with our USA athletes.

  • Career Fair: despite the government shutdown, the annual Career Fair, led by the NTID Co-op and Career Center, was a big success. It is always impactful for students to see the many alumni who return to campus as recruiters and role models.
  • The Big Shot: congratulations to Eric Kunsman and everyone involved in the planning and implementation of this year’s Big Shot at Highmark Stadium in Buffalo. It was an outstanding achievement.
  • Patrick Graham, chair of the Department of Deaf Education, co-published Early Childhood Deaf Education: Teacher Preparation and Instructional Approaches. The book also featured Russell West, visiting assistant professor; Chris Kurz, professor; and Nathan Harrison, lecturer in the Department of Deaf Education, as chapter contributors.
  • Stacy DeRooy, executive director of Title IX and Clery Compliance, and Amy Stornello, NTID Deputy Title IX Coordinator, presented “Patterns of Abuse in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Communities” at the 2025 Willow Way Summit Oct. 10.
  • Congratulations to the colleagues who earned their Cultural Humility Certificates. As always, the overwhelming number are members of NTID’s faculty and staff!
  • Peter Hauser, research faculty in the Center for Culture and Language, has been awarded the 2025-26 NTID Tenured Scholarship Award.

More from this edition

October activities kept us all very busy – Brick City Homecoming, Alumni and Foundation board meetings, NAG meeting, the Career Fair, the Big Shot, the hilarious production of “The 39 Steps,” and of course, the inauguration. Thank you to all of you who participated and attended the ceremony. From the planning to the day itself and beyond, the warmth and positive energy that radiated in Panara and Dyer made the day a special one.

You asked, and I’m answering! Here are a few of our students’ most burning questions.

Fall is a very busy season for the Admissions team with travel, open houses, and more.

We are in discussions to establish and strengthen collaborations with countries around the world and organizations here in Rochester.
