2D Ideation - Kodak Advantix Film Canister Concepts

Industrial designers must be able to express their ideas rapidly and confidently using traditional hand sketching. It is an important initial step in the industrial design process. Whether it’s done using paper and markers or with a stylus and an electronic tablet, industrial designers learn how to quickly express form solutions that are driven by complex engineering. 2D ideation is a form of rapid prototyping and is highly valued by corporate and consulting studios. It is one of the first things that hiring managers look for in student and professional portfolios.

The sketch concepts shown here are some of the first design ideas for a new film canister for the Advanced Photo System developed by Kodak, Canon, Fuji, Minolta and Nikon. I was able to depict a few of the new features of the canister such as cover designs and the Visual Exposure Indicators which tell the photographer whether the canister is new, partially used, exposed and ready for processing and processed. This feature enabled the user to remove the film during mid-roll and insert a new or partially used canister into enabled cameras.
