From Interpreter to Advocate: Jordan Scheidt Designs Her Path in Deaf Education
When Jordan Scheidt transferred to RIT/NTID from a community college in Ohio, she originally entered the ASLIE program to become an interpreter. But she found her real spark in Deaf education. Through the School of Individualized Study, she designed a major that let her explore Deaf culture, language accessibility, and education while building deep community connections.
Her SOIS capstone focused on the stigma surrounding cued speech and the language development of Deaf students. That research fueled her next step: graduate school for Deaf education.
“I remind myself: my heart is so big for the Deaf community, and it’s not limiting.” Cued speech is something I love, even when it comes with strong opinions.
Jordan’s journey reflects what SOIS does best: helping students follow what matters most and shape an education as multifaceted as their passions.
