Day Trips Less Than 90 Minutes from Rochester

Taughannock Falls State Park - only 90 minutes from RIT

Rochester is perfect for day trips that feel like mini-vacations without the commitment (or hotel bill, which is perfect on a graduate budget). Here are my favorite places to reset—all within about an hour and a half from Rochester.

Watkins Glen State Park

Drive Time: 1 hr 30 min

Watkins Glen State Park is 100% worth the drive! The trail winds through towering stone walls and past 19 waterfalls—yes, 19. There are a lot of steps, so be prepared for that! You can get an amazing view without walking too far into the park. Wear good shoes as it can be a bit slippery on the trail, and maybe pack a sketchbook if you’re into drawing.

Letchworth State Park

Drive Time: 1 hr

Many call Letchworth State Park “the Grand Canyon of the East,” and boy, did it live up to its name. I was shocked! Letchworth is full of various hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. You can drive through the park and stop at multiple viewpoints if you aren't in a hiking mood, or spend a few hours hiking. It’s peaceful, and the views are just incredible. I loved packing a lunch with me, but they have a few little spots where you can stop and buy snacks or ice cream!

Corning Museum of Glass

Drive time: 1 hr 30 min

Corning Museum of Glass is a must for any maker. I went thinking I would only spend an hour or two, and ended up there all day! The museum has an immense history, and live demos that make you want to immediately sign up for a glassblowing class. Plus, it’s inspiring to see a craft world adjacent to clay, but with its own sparkle. They have an amazing gift shop!

Taughannock Falls State Park

Drive time: 1 hr 30 min

Taughannock Falls State Park has various trails for every skill level. I like a nice easy hike, so we took the Gorge Trail, which was .95 miles along the creek. What’s fun about this trail is that you can easily walk on the rock beds and cool off in the stream! Once you get to the waterfall, it’s an incredible view! It makes you feel incredibly small as it’s a 215-foot plunge (three stories taller than Niagara Falls)!

These spots offer fresh air and major inspiration! Most are just as fun solo as they are with friends. Happy wandering!

Hello! I’m Jamie Westermeyer, a ceramics MFA student at RIT’s School for American Crafts. I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and moved to Rochester by way of San Francisco. When I’m not in the studio, you can find me thrifting, hiking, or testing new recipes with my fiancé. I’m excited to share my journey as a maker and grad student at RIT.
