Summer in Rochester: Day Trip to Niagara Falls by Bus

After a long winter and a relatively short spring, everyone’s itching for a sunny day out in Rochester. In my (unpopular) opinion, summer here is actually the best time to explore and have fun! There’s something happening every weekend—festivals, local markets, concerts—and so many ways to get outside, like hitting up the parks for a picnic or taking short hikes.

In this post, I’m sharing an easy, affordable day trip itinerary and budget for visiting the iconic Niagara Falls by bus. The best part? It costs less than $100!

Sure, Niagara Falls is just an hour and a half away by car. But for students and especially international students without a car, driving can be a challenge. I was pleasantly surprised to learn you can snag a bus ticket for as low as $13 one-way! Round-trip tickets typically come in under $30, depending on your chosen time slot.

Day Trip Itinerary

  • 6:35–8:40 AM: Bus from Rochester to Niagara Falls
  • 9:00–9:30 AM: First round of the Maid of the Mist boat tour (prepare for an unforgettable, misty adventure!)
  • 9:30–10:00 AM: Quick coffee and breakfast to refuel
  • 10:00 AM–12:00 PM: Stroll through the park, soak up the falls, and snap those Instagram-worthy photos
  • 12:00–1:00 PM: Lunch at a local restaurant or picnic spot
  • 1:05–3:25 PM: Bus back to Rochester

Estimated Budget Breakdown

  • Local Transportation: $15.00 (Uber/Lyft to and from the bus stop)
  • Maid of the Mist Tour: $30.00 (entry ticket)
  • Meals & Snacks: $25.00 (breakfast, lunch, and coffee)
  • Bus Tickets: $25.00 (round-trip bus fare)
  • Total Estimated Budget: $95.00

Logistics

Bus tickets can be purchased through Greyhound or other bus services. Prices are fairly stable, so even if you book a day or just a few hours before departure, you’ll likely find a good deal. However, if you prefer to secure a specific time slot, it’s wise to book in advance. Buses run from very early in the morning until late at night, giving you plenty of flexibility.

Pro Tips

  • Check the Weather: A sunny day makes for spectacular views, with the sun hitting the falls and forming rainbows. Weather can also affect boat tour schedules, so plan accordingly.
  • Look for Special Events: Check for fireworks or festivals at the park so you can plan your day (and bus schedule) to enjoy the extra festivities.
  • Bring Friends: Share the ride (Uber/Lyft) and the fun! Plus, splitting expenses makes the trip even more budget-friendly.

So there you have it—a fun, affordable, and unforgettable day trip to Niagara Falls from Rochester!
