Experiencing Campus Traditions as a First-Year Student

As we approach the coldest months, they tend to get dreary. The weather gets very cold, it gets dark early, back-to-back classes, work, club activities, it can all become overwhelming. However, from late January to early February every year, we have a winter festival called FreezeFest. It’s one of RIT’s traditions that we all look forward to.

As a first-year student at RIT, it’s so exciting to look forward to and get excited about. It's two weeks of fun, with such many events, food, and merchandise up for grabs! It gives you something to look forward to, and it makes our campus life so unique and vibrant.

Here are some examples of events that we have to offer:

  1. Wii Party Event: A night of Wii sports and Just Dance! This is the first event I attended, and we got to decorate cookies, receive some merch, free hot chocolate, and we got games to play with friends. I had so much fun playing Just Dance, it’s such a workout! The event staff were so fun and friendly, often joining in on the gaming sessions as well.
  2. CAB x Basketball Tiger Den vs. Ithaca: This exciting basketball game is our Women’s and Men’s teams going up against Ithaca College, and I assure you it will keep you on the edge of your seat!
  3. SLT’s Sexy Bingo: An inclusive wellness event that aims to celebrate body positivity, reproductive rights, and keeping education fun and positive! It is hosted by NTID, so it is accessible to all, and you can even win prizes. I love events like these, because they help break down barriers and stigmas.

And that’s just a fraction of the fun! Frosty Paws & Fireside Treats, PJ Party, College Night at the Strong Museum of Play, Winter Village, and CAB Olympics are all more events you can find me at! There is so much to explore and go to, and I love how connected it makes me feel not only to the campus, but to the greater Rochester community. Especially as an out-of-state student, I find it to be a way safe to connect and explore my new surroundings.
