First-Time Skiing at Bristol Mountain: An RIT Grad's Winter Escape

As a grad student juggling classes, it has become essential to hit that reset button amid the grind. Driving out to Bristol Mountain felt like the perfect extension of that. It was intimidating strapping on skis for the first time, but just like those first outings that made Rochester feel like home, it reminded me how stepping away from the books (or laptops) builds the best kind of memories.

Getting to Bristol Mountain

Bristol Mountain is about a 40–50-minute drive from Rochester, tucked into the hills near Canandaigua in the Finger Lakes region. The closer you get, the more the flat city streets fade into winding roads and snow-covered trees, and it finally starts to feel like a real winter getaway instead of just another cold Rochester day.

First-Time Skier on the Slopes

Walking into the lodge with rental skis in hand felt equal parts intimidating and exciting, especially knowing this was my first time skiing. Bristol has a good range of beginner-friendly trails, so I didn’t feel out of place wobbling through the rental area and shuffling toward the learning slope with other first-timers. Once I got the hang of stopping (mostly) and turning (sometimes), linking a few turns together down a green run felt like winning a small personal championship.
The ski lifts ended up being one of my favorite parts of the day. Even when my legs were tired, I never skipped a ride up because the views from the chair were completely worth it with snow-dusted trees and long trails stretching out below. It’s one of those experiences where you catch yourself just sitting in silence, watching the landscape go by, and realizing how different it feels from campus life.

Why the Weather Matters

Rochester winters are famously unpredictable, and Bristol Mountain is no exception, so I’d recommend planning your trip around the forecast. If you can, try to pick a day that’s at least a little sunny and not too windy. The views from the summit are so much better when the sky opens, and you’re not getting pushed around by gusts on the lift.

Night Skiing and Fire Pit Vibes

If you stay into the evening, Bristol lights up almost all its trails for night skiing, and the whole mountain takes on a different energy. After a few runs under the lights, the best move is to wander back toward the base area and claim a spot near one of the outdoor fire pits, which are perfect for thawing out your fingers and trading wipeout stories with friends. Sitting in a chair, boots still clipped, watching skiers carve down the hill while the flames crackle in front of you feels like the cozy, winter-movie version of student life we all secretly want.

A Reason to Come Back in Summer

One unexpected perk of visiting in winter is realizing how much there is to do at Bristol once the snow melts. In the summer, the same hills turn into Bristol Mountain Aerial Adventures, with a ropes course, zipline canopy tour, and treetop obstacles that let you climb and fly through the forest instead of sliding over it. It’s an easy weekend trip from RIT, and if you enjoyed the winter views from the lift, you’ll probably love seeing the green Bristol Hills from high up in the trees.
