Fitness on Campus: A Grad Student’s Guide at RIT

It has been both rewarding and challenging for me to balance my graduate school life at RIT while trying to remain fit and healthy. As a graduate student in a demanding computer science program, I have learned that maintaining a regular fitness routine is not only beneficial for my health, but it also helps me cope with stress, stay focused, and maintain my energy levels during long days of classes, research, and projects. I would like to share my workout routine and some tips that have worked well for me on campus, as well as one of my favorite healthy meal prep ideas that keeps me going.

Wiedman Fitness Center

The Wiedman Fitness Center is one of the best places to stay active at RIT. It is a large gym with a wide range of equipment, including weights, machines, and cardio equipment. I like to stop by after class or in the early evening when there are fewer people there. It makes a big difference to have a place that looks clean and welcoming. The official RIT Recreation and Wellness page list current hours, so I can plan my visit and avoid busy times. This way, I can get the most out of my workout without having to wait. Gordon Field House

The Gordon Field House is another place I like to change up my workout. I love using its indoor track and courts to run or play badminton with friends. It is also great for days when I want to work out in a different way than I usually do at the gym. The Field House keeps me motivated and reminds me to stay active in a fun way. You can also find schedule information online, which is very helpful for fitting workouts into my school schedule. Gordon Field House Hours

Nutrition

Nutrition is a big part of my fitness routine, especially since grad school keeps me so busy. I have learned that planning my meals ahead of time helps me stay on track and not reach for unhealthy snacks. Greek yogurt chia pudding is one of my favorite recipes. It is very easy to make and take with me, and it is full of protein and fiber to keep me going all day. I usually make a few jars at a time so that I always have a quick, healthy

As a grad student, I have many things to do, but making time for exercise has helped both my body and mind. Whether it is a short workout at Wiedman, a run at Gordon Field House, or making healthy snacks like chia pudding ahead of time, these routines become the base that holds everything else up. If you are an RIT graduate student searching for motivation, I hope this look into my daily life helps you find your own balance.

You can review the schedules of these great campus gyms and find workouts that fit your schedule. Keep in mind that consistency is more important than intensity. Start small and add to your routine one step at a time. Your future self will be grateful!
