New room, new decorations. You may be seeing the long list of things to bring and not to bring and are wondering what to do. Maybe there’s a very intimidating list of figurines you absolutely need to have with you that might not fit. Maybe your fifty stuffed animals just might not fit. Well, this blog is here to assist.
Bed Decoration
Let’s start with the bed. The most important part of a good night’s sleep. Bring two blankets! When you first come to RIT in August, it's going to be hot for a while, so having your winter blanket during that time is not a good idea. Bring something lighter that you can easily store away and fold when winter has arrived. Temperature control is going to be needed during Rochester’s weird weather.
Apart from that requirement, you do have space for bed decorations. Do you want to have plushies on the bed? There’s space if you’re alright with them sometimes escaping off the foot of the bed. Do you want to have fancy pillows? Also, space for that. If you add anything for decoration that you would need to remove entirely for bed, make sure you either have a spot to store it or that your roommate is okay with you having something lying on the floor overnight.
Wall Decoration
While there’s a lot RIT does not permit, there’s still something you can do to make the wall space your own. Add wall shelves that take up just a little bit of wall space but still display your figurines or trinkets! Add organizers to the wall for things like necklaces, coats, and maybe even whiteboards. Just keep in mind that everything has to be removable for the end-of-year move-out.
Floor Decoration
Rugs! You should see the space before you get one, so you know a rug fits, but it's definitely a nice thing to have that adds some more life to the space you live in. A shaped rug? A square one? Thick carpet or a shorter one? Just make sure your rug of choice fits the space and you’re all good.
Desk Decoration
Your computer, of course. I found success in adding space extenders, such as collapsible shelves that I could place on my desk, which permitted me to add more to it. You want to have things on your desk that are easy to reach, but you also don’t want to make it boring! Add figurines, stuffed animals, books, maybe keep your favorite trading cards on display on your desk. The choice is yours. Maybe just stickers- although you need to make sure everything you put on can be taken off. So maybe not stickers.
Everything else!
From here, it may become harder to find space for decor that doesn’t interfere with the important things you need to have around. You can decorate your door if you want to, both inside and on the outside. You can add things to your windowsill, as long as there’s space. You just need to think about space, look closely at images, and then plan out what you want to bring that makes the room feel more yours.
