Your Guide to Living at Global Village as an Upperclassmen

Global Village is a common area for second-year housing. Some students will head off campus during their third year, but you can live in Global Village for two years. Here are some key reasons I chose to stay in Global Village for a second year as an upperclassmen:

Location

Global Village is on the academic side of campus and home to many shops, such as Crossroads and Midnight Oil. Nearby is the Global Village housing area, making it one of the most convenient places to live on-campus! Personally, I was able to walk to all my classes from here, even in winter weather, because of my proximity to academic buildings.

Even better, the Global Village Market is right around the corner. When I lived in GV 100, I could just step outside in casual clothing (and a coat, of course, it's still Rochester) to buy myself a snack, and step right back in. Similarly, Global Village’s Post Office is also close by.

Interior

Each of these buildings are suites and can house up to five people. There’s always at least one double room, so you might have a roommate, even though most rooms are singles. Both years I was in Global Village, there was a kitchen, which was a massive step up from the dorms.

Your laundry room is also inside, so no need to walk out into the cold for your laundry. It’s always on the first floor, so all you have to do is use the elevator down. I found that using this laundry room was a massive step up from the dorm side laundry rooms, mainly because it would frequently be much less crowded. There are designated trash rooms inside the building where you can bring your trash bags without having to step outside at all.

My Experience

Pros: Location, how easy it is to get to the stores, the post office, indoor trash room, and convenient laundry room.

Cons: Living with a lot of other people (this can be a big switch after only having one roommate in year one).

However, the convenience of the area just made everything that much more worth it. I could get up early for my class, go to Midnight Oil, pick up my breakfast, and then head to class. I could even go get the mail on the way home without having to go far out of the way! Convenience was key for my decision.

Overall, I highly recommend living in Global Village as an upperclassmen!
