Engineering Insight into Human Physiology: Measuring Physiologic Resilience Under Stress

David R. Holmes III, PhD

Professor of Biomedical Engineering

Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

Abstract

The human body is resilient to physiologic stress, to the point that changes that are not apparent from conventional clinical measurements. In this talk, I will highlight work examining two distinct forms of physiologic challenge: cerebral adaptation to acute hypoxia and cardiovascular compensation during progressive blood loss. These studies illustrate how advanced imaging, physiologic signal analysis, and computational methods can uncover mechanisms of resilience and identify early indicators of declining reserve. More broadly, they demonstrate how engineering approaches can move from fundamental insight into human physiology toward measurements and tools with potential clinical value.

Biography

David R. Holmes III, Ph.D. is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic. He studies the methods by which healthcare researchers analyze and interpret large data sets. Dr. Holmes conducts his research from the perspective that data drives decisions. The use of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare has revolutionized biomedical research and clinical care, allowing for real-time mining the clinical and imaging data that exist within the electronic medical record yielding better-individualized strategies for patient health.

Beyond academia, Dr. Holmes actively contributes to the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, serving as Chair of the IEEE Southern Minnesota Section EMBS Chapter. He leads community outreach initiatives, including the IEEE Science Movie Night, engaging students in biomedical engineering. His dedication to research, education, and outreach reinforces his impact on healthcare innovation and mentorship.
