Dow Discusses Dual-Role Warehouses and Multi-Echelon Inventory at RIT

Dow’s supply chain complexity is high due to many factors. Implementation of inventory management theory frequently devolves into using single-echelon approximations. Dual-role warehouses and multi-echelon inventory cause many of these problems. Optimal policies are unknown, and current heuristics do not provide satisfactory solutions to planners. Scheduling behavior is also assumed and not incorporated. This work highlights gaps between supply chain practice and inventory management theory.
