Abstract
:

The research on ultrafast laser photonics is highly interdisciplinary, intersecting lasers, photonics, imaging, materials, precision controls, and applied physics.  In my presentation, I will discuss the methods and physical processes involved in utilizing ultrafast lasers to create photonic devices, including direct 3D writing of photonic circuits and waveguide lasers, nano-structuring, polishing, and micro-joining of optical components. Additionally, I will present our work on time-resolved optical microscopic imaging, physical modeling of laser material interaction, wavefront sensing, and beam shaping. These aspects are integral components for understanding and controlling the ultrafast-laser material interaction process to create functional devices.

Bio:
Dr. Jie Qiao is an associate professor at the Carlson Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She leads the Advanced Optical Fabrication, Instrumentation & Metrology Laboratory where her team of six PhD students and one Master’s student work on ultrafast-lasers-enabled advanced photonics, optics, dynamic imaging, wavefront sensing, and spatial temporal control of laser beams.
Dr. Qiao is an Optica Fellow and was an associate editor for Optics Express from 2018 to 2021. She was a Fulbright professor at the Université Bordeaux, France in the academic year 2022. Dr. Qiao is the General Chair for the 2024 and 2025 CLEO conference in the Application and Technology Program. As a founder and Chairperson, she has been leading Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Entrepreneurship (WiSTEE) internationally since 2013. Prior to joining RIT, she led the demonstration of the world’s first 1.5-meter coherently-phased-grating pulse compressor for the OMEGA EP kilojoule, petawatt lasers at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, the University of Rochester. She earned her doctoral degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Texas, Austin, and an MBA from the Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester.
