"An Introduction to Backtracking"

Golisano College presents Scott McElfresh, computer science lecturer candidate. Backtracking is an algorithmic technique used to solve a wide range of problems that arise in computing, being utilized in game-playing, artificial intelligence, and other areas where optimization is desired in the context of constraints.   This presentation will give an introduction to this technique, using both typical textbook examples and other applications.Bio: Scott McElfresh earned BS degrees from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, with majors in math, computer science, and cognitive science.   He earned his MS and PhD in computer science from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.  While his early research publications are in computational geometry, his more recent work is in computer science education, and the use of technology to help non-profit organizations.    Scott also plays the clarinet and is active on the local and national levels of the community music movement
