The 2013 RIT United Way Campaign “teed-off” on Sept. 20 with the 25th Annual RIT United Way Golf Tournament in memory of Joan Stone, former dean of RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences.

The field of 150 golfers raised more than $8,200, which exceeds any amount raised in the history of the event for United Way.

“This was the first year of the renaming of the tournament in memory of Joan, who was an avid participant in the event for many years and for whom this is a fitting and long lasting remembrance of the passion she brought not only to the event but also to our charitable efforts each year,” says Lynn Rowoth, director of special events and RIT United Way campaign coordinator.

Stone joined RIT as a faculty member of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in 1976, chaired RIT’s Faculty Council from 1990 to 1993, and served as associate provost for Academic Programs until her appointment as dean of RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, a position she held until 2009.

As a tribute to their mother, Stone’s three sons, Jeffrey, Michael and Andrew, were in attendance at the golf event in her honor.
