Harvey Stern â84 (hospitality administration/management) talked to CASTâs hospitality students about event management at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, one of the largest and most popular resorts in Las Vegas, during his visit to RIT on Nov. 2-4. The Executive Director of Catering and Banquets shared insights into how to manage extensive catering, menu development, event requests and overall convention services, and how to develop the leadership skills necessary for careers in hospitality and tourism. âOne of the takeaways I found beneficial was Mr. Sternâs career advice to work harder, faster, stronger and better,â said Jesse Redlo, a graduate student in the hospitality and tourism management program who attended the event. âHe also said to focus on whatâs best for the guest and best for the operation.â -

Some third-year photojournalism students toured organizations in New York City recently. William Snyder, professor and chair of the photojournalism program, arranged a week-long trip to visit photographers, publications, RIT alumni and non-governmental organizations. Reuters, The Associated Press, The New York Times, Time Magazine, Buzzfeed, Sports Illustrated, Getty and Esquire were among the places they stopped to meet and listen to experts in the industry. The trip is the culmination of a three-credit class that prepares photojournalism students in professional practices, including creating blogs, websites, resumes and business cards. -

Will Carver, a second-year computer science major from Clinton Corners, N.Y., was a guest at the Global Union Halloween party and costume contest on Oct. 31. Many of the Major Student Organizations on campus participated in the event, including but not limited to, College Activities Board, Student Government, NTID Student Council, WITR radio station and AALANA Collegiate Association. -

Ashley Murphy Shaw, a third-year biotechnology major, smashes a pumpkin at the Infinity Quad to benefit the Elizabeth Wende Breast Clinic. The fundraiser was hosted Oct. 30 by the RIT Pre-Health Student Association. -

RIT students celebrated Brazilian Day on Oct. 29. The event was sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Culture in the College of Liberal Arts. Visitors learned about Brazilian culture and music, and the Portuguese language. Photography major Estefania M. Stylists from Shear Global Salon put the final orange touches on President Bill Destlerâs hair Saturday night. Destler lived up to his promise to Tiger fans by dying his hair after a sellout crowd of 4,300 packed the Gene Polisseni Center. It was the first sellout in history for menâs hockey at the arena, which opened last year. -

Student residents in Global Village carved pumpkins for Halloween. Brittany Janis, a third-year student in chemical engineering, prepared her pumpkin for carving at the event sponsored by Residence Life. On Oct. 31, RITâs College Activities Board is hosting Halloween Blowout, including a costume contest, from 7-10 p.m. in the Student Alumni Union. -

First place in RITâs Tiger Tank competition went to ShoRaq, one of the five teams competing. ShoRaq is an intuitive interface that allows users to purchase specialty clothing from merchandise seen in their favorite shows and movies. The winning team received a $2,000 cash award and a scholarship to attend one of the graduate degree programs at Saunders College of Business. Team Body Cool earned second place for a cooling device worn by people with multiple sclerosis to discreetly control their symptoms during warm weather. -

Robert Latorre was the keynote speaker at the daylong 12th annual RIT Entrepreneurs Conference. Taking a bite out of the conference was Tiger Tank, a competition in which five student teams competed for nearly $5,000 in cash prizes and a full scholarship to attend one of the graduate programs at Saunders College of Business. The event is hosted by RITâs Albert J. Simone Center for Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship. -

More than 100 printing professionals and enthusiasts came to RIT Oct. 22-24 for the 40th annual American Printing History Association conference. Hosted by RITâs Cary Graphic Arts Collection, the conference allowed participants to investigate the connection between hand-operated printing presses in use from the 15th to 19th centuries, and todayâs work in the history of the book and fine press printing. Attendees used some of the Cary Collectionâs 18 historical printing presses, including the Kelmscott/Goudy Albion iron hand press. Here, Chad Johnson, from the San Francisco Center for the Book, prints on an Albion press once owned by John DePol. -

Amy Vernon, social-media content strategist, was the inaugural speaker for the 2015-2016 MAGIC Speaker Series. Vernon, who spoke to faculty, staff and students about social-media etiquette on Oct. 22, has been inducted into the New Jersey Social Media Hall of Fame and was named the 15th most influential women in tech on Twitter by Business Insider and Peer Index. -
