    Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of reddit.com, was the keynote speaker at Saunders College of Business Gasser Lecture Series on Oct. 14. His talk was followed by a book signing and a reception that included a tour of the new Data Analytics Lab and REDCOM Active Learning classroom at Saunders College.

    Danlin Zhao, a graduate student in the metals and jewelry design program, walked the runway at Fashion Week in Rochester. Students from Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Crafts (SAC) modeled stunning, self-designed jewelry during the opening show at Fashion Week of Rochester, held in the Tent in the Loop in the Inner Loop at Charlotte and Pitkin streets in downtown Rochester Oct. 13. RIT’s participation in this year’s Fashion Week marked the university’s largest presence in the three years that the Metals and Jewelry Design program has been involved in the event.

    Engineering undergraduates welcomed Doreen Edwards, the new dean of RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, as part of a meet-and-greet session in the college Oct. 11. Edwards began in July, coming to RIT from Alfred University. She is the first female dean of the engineering college.

    RIT interior design students Siobhain Page, left, Jordanae Smith and Octavia Spelman led a redesign project of the Writing Commons area inside The Wallace Center. The students worked collaboratively with Mary Golden, chair of the interior design program in the School of Design at the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, and Rachel Chaffee, director of the Writing Commons area along with RIT’s Facilities Management Services. The redesign project was a joint effort that included the University Writing Program, the interior design program, and The Wallace Center, which funded the redesign. A grand reopening celebration of the area is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 27, with a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m.

    Dean of Graduate Education Twyla Cummings shared personal stories and information about her professional path on Oct. 6 as part of the First Talk speaker series. The Office of Graduate Education is hosting an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 14 in room 3100 in the University Services Center.

    CAST’s manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology department celebrated National Manufacturing Day on Oct. 7. Process engineers from General Motors were on site to demonstrate a total engine teardown and rebuild for undergraduates in the programs. Later that day, the GM engineers and students met to discuss trends in the industry and work with the new GM robots in the Mechanical and Materials Lab.

    The RIT/NTID Performing Arts program presents Stories from the Deaf Side in the 1510 Theatre Lab in LBJ Hall. Written and directed by NTID Cultural and Creative Studies faculty member Aaron Kelstone, Stories from the Deaf Side focuses on Zak, who dreams of leaving his current life for one with no barriers. Limited seating is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7-8 and 2 p.m. Oct. 9.

    Katie Horan, from the RIT Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, spoke about her four years as a Franciscan volunteer minister in Philadelphia as part of the Agape Latte series Oct. 4 in the SAU Fireside Lounge. The speaker series, sponsored by the RIT Newman Catholic Community, focuses on faith on college campuses. People of all faiths are welcome to attend.
