RIT professor unveils major sculpture

JUNE 24—The Pieters Family Life Center in Henrietta, N.Y., has unveiled a 15-foot outdoor sculpture created by Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez ’94, ’01 (metals), associate professor in RIT’s School for American Crafts.

Commissioned by Heritage Christian Services, Caballero-Perez designed Stronger Together, a silver-toned abstract sculpture comprised of two curved columns connected at the top by a circular piece. The sculpture stands at the center’s entrance.

Heritage Christian Services is a human services organization that supports more than 1,400 children and adults with developmental disabilities.

“The sculpture symbolizes that humans are stronger when we stand together and depend on one another,” says Caballero-Perez. “It embodies support at any time.”

Caballero-Perez was one of 30 artists who submitted proposals for the project. The unveiling of Stronger Together was part of the festivities celebrating the 25th anniversary of Heritage Christian Services.

“This commission represents a substantial artistic and economic opportunity,” says Sarah Lentini, president and CEO of the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester and a member of the selection panel.

“Juan Carlos’ sculpture will provide a striking addition to the region’s cultural landscape. It is a reminder that the language of art is universal, relevant and essential to us all.”

Adds Caballero-Perez: “Rochester is my home and this is a way I can give back to the community.”
