Student sailed the seas on study abroad program
Kayla Weber sailed on the tall ship Corwith Cramer as part of a 12-week study abroad program, SEA Semester, offered through Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Mass. She is a senior biology major and member of the honors program at RIT.
The Corwith Cramer crew sailed from Woods Hole to St. Croix, in the Virgin Islands. They covered approximately 3,000 nautical miles and spent six weeks at sea aboard the 134-foot sailing school vessel.
Weber conducted research and provided weather observations to a national database. She learned to chart the course of the vessel using celestial navigation and to serve as the junior watch officer, taking full command of the vessel during a watch.
Before setting sail in October, Weber and her crewmates completed a six-week shore component, earning academic credit for curriculum in oceanography, nautical science and maritime studies.
