U.S. Commerce Department Tour Comes to RIT
William Sutton, assistant secretary for manufacturing, to promote sustainability
William Sutton, assistant secretary of commerce for manufacturing and services, will visit RIT on Sept. 23 as part of the department’s Sustainable Manufacturing American Regional Tours initiative, also known as SMART. Sutton will lead a group of firms on a tour of several area manufacturing facilities.
Sutton will also discuss sustainability with the Manufacturing Council, an advisory body comprised of 15 private-sector executives who reflect a balance of U.S. manufacturing sectors, locations and firm size.
The tour, designed to showcase the benefits of sustainable manufacturing, will begin with a morning press conference at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies, followed by media availability. The tour will then proceed to Eastman Kodak Co., Xerox Corp. and Harbec Plastics Inc.
The SMART initiative is part of the Commerce Department’s nationwide effort to highlight sustainable manufacturing success stories and promote profitable, environmentally sound manufacturing practices. Each of the firms visited, to varying degrees, has implemented resource-efficient, cost-effective manufacturing practices that have enhanced competitiveness in domestic and international markets.
