The Rochester Beacon talks to Ian Mortimer, vice president of Enrollment Management and associate provost of RIT Certified, about supporting underrepresented students.

RIT remains one of the nation’s best universities for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. The education-services company features RIT in the just-published 2023 edition of its book The Best 388 Colleges.

RIT has been recognized by Gizmodo, a design, technology, science, and science fiction website, for its offerings related to the top Degrees of the Future for 2022. RIT was named for its specialties in cybersecurity, environmental engineering, game design, and computer graphics.

There are 740 new RIT students enrolled in the Combined Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree program, designed to offer highly focused, goal-oriented incoming students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to work toward a bachelor’s and master’s degree, starting from the first day of classes.

The medical illustration MFA program at RIT has been awarded initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The award recognizes the program’s compliance with national standards and guidelines established by the profession.

This summer has taken third-year political science student Kaitlin Sommer from her hometown of Rochester, N.Y., to Washington, D.C. She has earned an internship working for U.S. Rep. Joseph Morelle, who represents New York’s 25th congressional district.

RIT’s MAGIC Center has developed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rochester Community TV to partner on an initiative to equip Rochester City School District high school students with actionable skills and provide exposure to future career opportunities in the growing video game industry.

A panel discussion at RIT among some of the Rochester region’s key stakeholders—employers, government officials, economic development leaders, and higher-education experts—provided the launch for RIT Certified, which aims to provide a wide range of alternative education courses, certificate programs, and skill-based learning experiences targeting people beginning their careers, changing roles, maintaining their existing job, or advancing in the workplace.

More than 1,500 students from 100 national and international collegiate race teams competed June 2-5 at RIT’s Gordon Field House and the Hogback Hill Motocross site in Palmyra, N.Y. Several teams aced the course, but at the end of the weekend, RIOT Racing, RIT’s Baja race team, conquered the field.
