Intersections: The RIT Podcast, Ep. 44: RIT took home the top trophy at the Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition international finals in 2021, beating out student teams from 63 other schools. Team captain Sunggwan Choi, a fifth-year computing security BS/MS student, and Spencer Roth, a third-year computing security BS/MS student, share their experiences from the team’s win and discuss how the competition has impacted their futures in the ever-changing field of cybersecurity.

With a global pandemic on our hands, a group of professors and student volunteers came together to build a software system that helps people get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Innovative Maker and Learning Complex will be a building like no other on the RIT campus, and an alumnus who is helping make it possible wants RIT students to give it a name to remember. A contest to name the building is for current RIT undergraduate and graduate students in good standing. Deadline for submission is March 13. Voting will begin March 18.

After careful consideration, it has been decided that this year’s Imagine RIT: Creativity and Innovation Festival will be fully virtual for safety and planning purposes. The date remains set for May 1, 2021.

Patti Cyr, lecturer in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, and Jennifer O’Neill, assistant professor in the College of Engineering Technology, discuss what the entrepreneurial mindset is and how connections to the network are providing an edge for RIT students.

Dimple Joseph’s short-term assignment last year turned out to be a “really big start up.” As part of the healthcare company Abbott, Joseph contributed to the main manufacturing site’s readiness to produce the company’s new BinaxNOW Rapid Test, which meets the growing demand for testing options as pandemic cases rise.

Saunders College of Business ranked 58th in the list of business schools in the nation by Poets&Quants, a leading resource for coverage of business education. Saunders College was recognized for placing high in employment outcomes for graduates, fueled by a strong cooperative education program and employment rates.

Analytical thinking, complex problem solving, creativity, resiliency, and flexibility are among the top skills needed for emerging careers by 2025. Anticipating these rapid changes in the workplace—further accelerated by lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic—RIT is seizing on the opportunity to guide students to “new economy majors” that are multi­disciplinary, transformative, and future-focused.

For too long, cybersecurity has been an afterthought. In a preemptive strike on cyber­security threats across the world, RIT has created the Global Cybersecurity Institute (GCI). Late last fall, the GCI opened the doors to its 52,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility on campus. With the institute, RIT is on its way to becoming one of the best places in the world for cybersecurity education, training, and research.

As part of a summer faculty development workshop sponsored by the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN), Patricia Cyr was recommended by workshop leaders for the fellowship because of her work during the program and while teaching at RIT to advance engineering course activities and to improve student learning outcomes.

Students on co-op are picking up more than occupational and professional skills. As the pandemic unfolded last spring and summer, they saw firsthand how companies manage even in the midst of a crisis.
