7 Life Skills to Master Before College

Coming to RIT is a big step, and while you’re probably excited about your major, clubs, and what your dorm will look like, don’t forget about the small stuff! Basic life skills like doing your laundry or managing your time might not sound exciting, but they’ll make a huge difference once you get to campus! Here are seven practical things you can do to make college life a little easier!

1. Doing Your Own Laundry

There are approximately 140 washers and 140 dryers found within 7 laundry facilities throughout the tunnels in the RIT residence halls, as well as an on-site laundry room at the RIT Inn. Get comfortable sorting your clothes, measuring detergent, and setting wash cycles (and timers) before you arrive!

2. Making Simple Meals

Dining halls like Gracie’s and Brick City Cafe have you covered for most meals, but they’re not open 24/7. Whether you’re in the residence halls or the RIT Inn, it helps to know how to whip up something basic like instant noodles or a sandwich if you are hungry and don’t want to leave your room.

3. Time Management

At RIT, professors don’t always remind you about assignments. You’ll have more freedom, as well as more responsibility. Start using Google Calendar or a planner to build good habits! Once your schedule includes classes, labs, club meetings, or maybe a part-time job, you’ll be glad you have it all organized.

4. Budgeting Basics

Between campus dining, textbooks, and late-night coffee at Midnight Oil, college expenses can add up fast. Practice budgeting your spending now! Make a habit of checking your bank account, your dining dollar amount, and avoid burning through funds within the first month or two.

5. Cleaning Up After Yourself

Living with others means keeping shared spaces clean. Learn the basics of wiping down your surfaces, doing your dishes, and taking out the trash. It’s not glamorous, but it makes everyone’s lives easier!

6. Asking for Help

There’s tons of support at RIT! Professors, office hours, the Academic Success Center, Counseling & Psychological Services (CaPS), and even your RA. But it’s up to you to take the first step. Practice asking for help now, whether it’s for school stuff or personal stress. It’s a skill, and you’ll use it more than you think!

7. Getting Enough Sleep

College schedules are busy, and campus can be loud late at night. Sleeping between 7 and 8 hours can boost your mood, memory, and focus! Start figuring out what helps you wind down, like setting a consistent bedtime or limiting screen time.

Starting college at RIT is an exciting new chapter in your life, and being prepared with these everyday skills can help you feel more confident and in control. You don’t have to be perfect; just having the basics down can make your transition smoother. Now go enjoy your summer, and get ready to crush it, Tigers!
