The Importance of Your Advisor as an International Graduate Student

Graduate school abroad is a journey unlike any other. It is filled with ambition, unfamiliar systems, and the constant challenge of finding your footing in a different culture. For international students, one of the most defining aspects of this journey is the relationship they build with their academic advisor. It’s a relationship that can influence not only academic progress but also confidence, career direction, and the overall graduate experience.

More Than Just an Academic Guide

When you’re far from home, your advisor often becomes more than just a guide for your thesis. They serve as your primary link to the department, your first sounding board for academic ideas, and occasionally, a mentor who helps you navigate both professional and cultural challenges. Having a strong rapport with your advisor can make even the toughest semesters feel manageable, because you know someone understands where you’re headed and supports your growth.

Communication Builds Trust

Any strong relationship begins with communication. International students sometimes hesitate to ask questions, worrying that they may seem unprepared or unsure. However, transparency is key. It’s equally important to share updates proactively, and it helps build trust over time.

Scheduling Your First Meeting

Taking the initiative to schedule a meeting is the best first step. At RIT, you can use Starfish, which is accessible directly through MyCourses or the Student Information System (SIS), to view your advisor’s availability and book a slot easily. If no times work or if the matter is urgent, stop by your department’s main advising office (for me, Computer Science) during walk-in hours or email your advisor directly.

My Advisor Helped me Secure my Co-op

During my co-op, the paperwork for CPT authorization and visa compliance felt overwhelming as an international graduate student. There were endless forms, deadlines, and university policies to manage alongside full-time work. My advisor stepped in with timely guidance on RIT’s processes, connected me with the right International Student Services (ISS) office contacts, and even reviewed my submission to ensure everything aligned correctly. That support allowed me to stay focused on the internship without unnecessary stress, proving how a strong advisor relationship can turn potential roadblocks into smooth paths.

Support Beyond Your Advisor

Sometimes, college life pressures extend beyond academics, especially for international students adjusting to a new environment. If additional support is needed for stress, homesickness, or personal challenges, RIT’s Counseling and Psychological Services offers confidential resources to help students maintain their well-being.
