Where Science Meets the Stage: The Performing Arts at RIT

With the new addition of the Performing Arts Center, RIT is becoming one of the best homes for non-major performing arts students. With this unique ability, students like me can blend their interests. Studying biomedical sciences, the RIT Wind Symphony gives me a creative outlet and helps me focus in ways my classes can’t. Additionally, the new Performing Arts Center has provided me with an on-campus job opportunity that works with my schedule. RIT offers an array of ensembles, classes, and clubs that are compatible with students’ busy schedules.

During one of our more recent concerts in February, we performed in our “As Winter Begins to Thaw” concert, the first of two this semester. Two different ensembles performed: Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble, a total of nine selections showcased. Meanwhile, the 2026 Wind Ensemble was chosen to perform at the College Band Director’s National Association Eastern Conference in Amherst, Massachusetts, this March, along with other institutions such as the University of Connecticut and William and Mary College.

One of the best aspects of the performing arts ensembles at RIT is that they are artists from all majors and backgrounds with a common love: music. While I focused on the instrumental performance groups, there are plenty of other options. Some other performing arts ensembles include the Jazz ensembles, RIT Singers, theater courses, RIT Dance Collective, dance courses, and many more.

Till There Was You Dress Rehearsal for the Inaugural Performance in the RIT Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, April 8, at the Performing Arts Center.

On top of the already existing beautiful performing arts spaces, the new Performing Arts Center opened in April with its inaugural performance of Til There Was You. The 3-story, 750-seat theater houses two balconies, with costume and scene shops, and will have a restored 1927 Barton theater organ originally built for the Hollywood Theatre in Detroit. It provides new rehearsal and performance spaces for RIT performing arts students as well as a mid-sized space for external performances, workshops, and events.
