Grocery 101 @ RIT

by Kexin “Coco” Wang, Visual Communication Design MFA

The first big flakes just fell last week, I believe a lot of students are trying to run to the grocery stores to stock up for their winter nourishment. In the meantime, the spring semester is just around the corner, and grocery shopping could become a big chapter of a student’s life after arriving on campus. Especially for some of the international students who don’t own a car, grocery shopping might become very hard sometimes. So I am going to list out some easy grocery shopping options for students who want to get familiar with the grocery situation around RIT so that that can better prepare for their new life here.

On-Campus Grocery Stores

– The Corner Store

The Corner Store is an on-campus convenience store located in Nathaniel Rochester Hall, on Level A. It offers all kinds of fresh produce, sandwiches and dairy products, snacks and beverages, etc. And it opens until 1 am for most of the time so it’ll be good for students who stay late studying on campus.

– Café & Market at Crossroads

This market-style shop is located in the Crossroads building in Global Village. It’s filled with a variety of grocery goods including fruits, vegetables, snacks and beverages, dry goods and even school supplies. And students could also order delivery to their meeting or room from their site. This will come in particularly handy when the weather’s not so good or students are just simply lazy.

-The Market at Global Village

The market is a place to get organic, local & international, ethnic, fair trade, and sustainable foods and other household goods on campus, located in Global Village.

-RIT FoodShare

The RIT FoodShare is a special program that’s created to offer the RIT community an opportunity and space to donate non-perishable items, swap out items they have for those they want, and/or take items they need. It’s located at 113 Riverknoll within the Apartment Area West office and each person can take up to five items per visit to the center.

Off-Campus Grocery Stores

– Wegman’s

Wegman’s is a popular grocery store near campus that a lot of students like to visit. It’s a Rochester-based, family-owned grocery chain that provides all sorts of groceries that you could think of. It’s also famous for its prepared food, extensive produce section, meats and cheeses. Another good thing is, RIT runs shuttles to Wegman’s too – students who don’t own a car, this is your great chance to get groceries off-campus.

-Walmart

There’s also a Walmart located a 5-7 min drive away from the campus, which offers a lot of back-to-school deals at the beginning of the semesters.

-Target

Target is also within about 6 minutes of drive from the campus. It’s located in the marketplace mall area, same as Walmart.

-Asia Food Market

This is the biggest Asian grocery store near campus (located on Brighton Henrietta Town Line Rd) and I personally go there very often. Students could get authentic Asian foods and beverages, including some prepared meals as well.

-Spice Bazaar

Spice Bazaar is a grocery store specializing in Indian food and beverages, located on Jefferson Rd.

– International Food Market

International Food Market is a Turkish grocery store in Jefferson Plaza. Its kebab is very popular, and so as its Fresh and halal meat.

– Lori’s Natural Foods Center

Lori’s Natural Food Center provides the Rochester community with high-quality, healthy and fresh food and natural supplements, and it’s located on Jefferson Road.

– Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s is a bit distance from the campus – about 13-15 min of drive, but it does have a good selection of groceries with reasonable prices. It’s store brand also produces good quality stuff.

So these are pretty much all of the grocery stores that I could think of right now, I hope that it will help some of you who are new to the campus or are about to get to know the campus soon! Have fun grocery shopping in Rochester!
