Topic: DE&I in the Restaurant and Foodservice Industry
Abstract: The restaurant industry is currently one of the largest, demographically diverse, and most in-demand employers in the U.S., yet one of 68 professions with a median wage under $30,000 annually. These indicators contribute to a low wage, low skill moniker that has hung over this industry sector for decades, and the image has been tarnished further by ongoing retention problems, continued evidence of racial discrimination, and increasing calls for social justice. One of the ways restaurant and foodservice companies can address these challenges is to implement policies and practices that actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in employment. Unfortunately, in light of the aforementioned concerns, the efficacy of DE&I initiatives in the restaurant and foodservice industry appear suspect. To address this concern, the purpose of the current study was to examine the nature and extent of diversity management initiatives that have been adopted by firms in the restaurant and foodservice industry, and the extent to which the adopted DE&I policies and practices may be related to firm-level diversity and perceptions about working in the restaurant and foodservice industry among current and former restaurant and foodservice employees.
